I needed a new ipod dock, badly. Turns out, I had the perfect 5 foot "dock" siting right before me the whole time. The solution was simply using the tape input on the back of the hifi unit, and purchasing an adapter cord that fed into the ipod's headphone jack. This is the one I ordered off of ebay (3.5mm Stereo Headphone Plug 5 Pin MIDI Din Male 1.5m) but check your unit for the correct plug (count the pins!). It was amazing to hear the capability of the speakers in this vintage unit outside the worn records we often play. I'm in LOVE.
While I'm at it, here's another trick for when you're dockless and want to share the sound. Putting your ipod in a bowl amplifies the sound noticeably in a fix. Use a glass or ceramic bowl, and enjoy.
