Lune Vintage

Well, what do you want from me? I'm a busy momma, ok? It's not easy to get much done with a couple sweet kids who need me to get them ready, feed them, drop them off, play with them, pick them up, feed them, drop them off, play with them, pick them up, feed them, and play with them again. That and getting supper ready and trying to fold some laundry so no one is wearing too tight, too loose, or too ripped pants in public, before continuing with the feeding, playing, bathing, reading and tucking into bed. Good thing they're so friggin loveable.

So, sometimes I pass on the iPod and say - LOOK AT THIS!!! And then, instead of resting, I do something for Lune. Like a crazy person. I am a crazy person. Fact. More so because it's 12:04 am and the first moment in the day I had to blog.

CHECK OUT THESE SPARKY VINTAGE BOW TIES WE ADDED TO THE LUNE WEBSHOP THIS WEEKEND. I SHOULD BE WEARING ONE NOW SINCE TODAY IS SUCH A BUSY DAY. IF THINGS ARE SLOW AROUND THE BLOG, IT ALMOST ALWAYS MEANS THAT TIME IS MOVING QUICKLY AROUND HERE.

I'VE BEEN STOCKING THE STUDIO FOR A BIG VINTAGE UPDATE, AND WORKING HARD ON PUTTING FINISHING TOUCHES ON OUR BIG RELEASE OF INDIE BUSINESS: COMPASS FOR THIS THURSDAY. MY SUNDAY INCLUDED A FULL DAY MEETING WITH THE INDIE BIZ CREW. I'M NOT USED TO SITTING AT A DESK, SO I WAS ACTUALLY KIND OF LOOKING FORWARD TO TRYING IT OUT. THE LAST TIME I SAT AT AN OFFICE DESK, I WAS 19 AND WORKED AS A BOOKING ASSISTANT TO A RESORT IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC (WHICH LED TO OUR FAMILIES LOVE AFFAIR WITH CABARETE BEACH). I CAN STILL REMEMBER ANSWERING THE PHONE IN THE EXACT SAME CADENCE EVERY TIME. SO MANY TIMES, IT'S CARVED INTO MY BRAIN. THIS TIME IT WAS FUN FOR ABOUT AN HOUR OR TWO. SOME OF US WERE NOT MEANT FOR DESKS.

I am a Dreamer, The free form way I run Lune supports my tendency to constantly dream up different ways of doing things. There was a time that I felt this impulse to act on my list of new ideas was a negative, but I have come to embrace it. Because of that, I continue to have passion for my business. Taking Lune mobile two years ago is a good example of how I craft my business to suit my nature. Lune is an organic, true reflection of me as an individual.

I am Devoted. I have been through my share of trial and heartbreak with Lune. There were times when I considered hanging up my keys and taking the more trodden path. But, I am devoted by nature. When I dedicate myself to someone or something, it is near impossible to break that bond. It isn’t easy for me to form these solid connections, but when they are forged – to the end of the earth I will go! This attitude has allowed me to move forward past heartache and misstep without seemingly skipping a beat. It is what drives me to remain positive and forward thinking in my business, which turns 9 years old this winter!

The traits that best describe me, especially in business, are perceptive, determined & a little sassy. My perceptiveness means that I naturally want to explore all sides of any issues that present themselves so I can understand exactly what's happening & find a solution. I can easily see things from other people's perspectives, and can imagine how they're feeling based on their writing or how they're speaking, which makes me a good problem solver who can find solutions in hard situations- and I can usually get to the heart of the matter quickly. I really like to make sure that Freckled Nest's clients always feel heard and feel that someone understands them- and I love being one of those people.

My determined personality means that I love making plans and following through on them. Once I have an idea I want to get all the details figured out and then stick with the plan! Making decisions based on the information that's available and taking immediate action charges up my batteries and gets me excited! I'm adding sassy to the mix because I have a big personality and like making sure the people around me are having a good time. I have a nearly unshakable sense of humour and don't take myself too seriously, which I think is really helpful in making my clients feel comfortable and it makes the long days that go into having an indie business much easier to work through.

I love people and socializing but because I’m an introvert, I get shy, anxious and drained in large groups and I need retreat physically and mentally to recharge. Aware of this, I built my business model focusing on individual experiences in the online marketplace and I work from home or the office. I’ve found that one of the coolest luxuries of building your own business is that you can customize it to suit all of your strengths and adapt around your weaknesses!

Another personality trait I use in business is my keen intuition! My instincts are based upon past lessons & success and I use them to plan, design, make decisions, explore options, direct our business and determine how I treat others. I love that I have an internal compass that guides me and I nurture it by learning from everything around me and trusting my gut.

WHO, WHEN & WHERE

Jasmine McCaffrey started Ricochet Waves in 2009 while living in Chicago. A collector and creator with a background in Graphic Design and Painting, her projects always involve mixed media magic.

The Ricochet Waves shop moniker was inspired by the wheat fields in her root state, Kansas: when a storm rolls in it sets the fields in a rhythmic waving motion of pure nostalgia. "Ricochet" captures this visual but also aims at including our sincere connection to each other- past lives and how each of us affect the next.

THE WHY & HOW

Jasmine considers re-purposing and recycling to be the core of each creation. Fancies from the past are combined with handmade additions giving a robust and deep-rooted story to each piece. She believes that nature and natural history are vital to the process of making a most sincere one of a kind.

WHAT

(alpha bravo charlie echo) GYPSY DISCO 2012 is the newest collection available in the Ricochet Waves Etsy Shop. This series is weaved together with the use of hand cut and hand painted bamboo as beads. When her artwork, wearable or otherwise, is simmering,Jasmine spends her day creating flower arrangements for a family owned flora land landscape design shop. Full circle, the use of bamboo in her jewelry design was conjured while creating Ikebana arrangements. This week we focus in on challenges we faced in the first stages of developing our own businesses.

The first challenge I faced as a young indie business owner was financial. I had a basic plan for how I would run my vintage business, but didn't have any savings or support to back it up. Since I was young and had a very short credit history and no experience, a business loan was out of the question and my day job barely paid the bills as it was. My only option was to start from scratch, work with what tools I had, and to be very frugal with my earnings.

I know that if financial support was made available to me in the beginning, before I had a firm understanding of how and where to invest it, Lune would not be here today. I would likely be paying off debt from a long forgotten project, and have missed out on a world of experience. Working within my own budget allowed me to take small chances with little risk, and feel able to change direction at will without great financial waste or repercussion. In hindsight, I’m positive that dedication to my Indie business was forged because of the struggle it took to keep believing in it. It also gives me faith that anyone can make their business happen if they take it at their own pace and play it smart!

My indie business life has two parts: Before I became a partner in Freckled Nest & after, but for this question I'm going to focus on the before. When I was just starting, my focus was on my blog advertising program and my Etsy shop, which meant that my business relied on selling lots of small products at low price points. I had a plan and I knew that it could work in time, but it meant that I needed to transition from having my blog as a personal space to being a place that I could also share the projects & products that I was working on. But when I tried to share what I was up to, I felt so lost!

My blog had been entirely personal up until that point, and while I had previously shared a few recipes and crafts here and there I was concerned about how my audience would react to hearing about this new part of my life. As a bit of an over-thinker I was also very aware of how sometimes blogs that have a selling component to them can feel less relatable than what I liked reading, so I knew I had to find a way to add this new part of my life and business into my blog in a way that was natural for me. The solution came as my confidence increased and I realized that my blog readers were curious about all kinds of things that I was interested in, and that as long as I was being genuine, choosing the times to talk about my business deliberately and letting my personality shine through I was still delivering what they wanted. It was a big weight off my shoulders & an exciting realization!

I jumped into small business with a lot of zeal but with very little information and footing. Looking back, I think what I needed most in the beginning was a mentor to help me find my way a little more smoothly. Everything worked out in time and I learned a lot through trial and error but it would have been nice to talk with someone who shared the same drive and dream, understood the struggles and work behind every little thing, and someone whose wisdom and perspective I could learn from and be inspired by. When Jill and I met a year later, we became the perfect cheerleaders and support system for each other-- we’d go for coffee & cake with our notebooks and dream big, brainstorm possibilities, push our comfort zones, update each other on new things with each of our businesses, and through everything, we knew we could share anything and feel understood.

Around the time we met, I was struggling with finding the right marketplace for my handmade goods. After renting tables at a few Christmas Craft Sales, I discovered that the local market wasn’t my scene. My handmade work was really well received but not often purchased, the craft sale season was short lived each year, and I wasn’t ready to open a local store or split profit with consignment. I wanted a different approach that I could manage alongside my day job and that would keep me in charge of my brand and sales. Jill encouraged me to keep going and we brainstormed options for my next move. Challenges will always flex my business muscles but I’ve been lucky to have both Jill and Kyla as the best cheerleaders around and love doing the same for them-- it’s so much better when you’re not alone!

Last night, I mentioned Michelle Phillips (singer/songwritter and member of the 60s group The Mamas & the Papas) in conversation with my mom, who fully agreed that she was notoriously beautiful and admired in her era. It reminded me of a feature I've been meaning to start on Lune, highlighting women I admire for their stand out foxyness, both in appearance and attitude. We've taken many strides over the past 60 years, but one thing I think we've lost is the ability to truly harness the power of feminine beauty. These women knew how to rock their look, from flowerchild to vixen. Let them remind us, it's cool to bring foxy back.

STUDIO AT NIGHT

I love the studio at night. The warm glow of lamps, music flowing, hot coffee, streetlights sparkle through the haze of the curtain, and the time to focus on just vintage, just design, just Lune.

Last night my biggest job was photographing vintage stock for Lune's Etsy Sale Shop. I haven't promoted it much since there's only been bits and pieces up until this point. I went through my vintage racks and realized there was a lot of great stuff in there that wasn't quite right for the web store, but defiantly still very cool. When I go for a buy, sometimes I have to purchase the whole lot to get only a few pieces that I have my heart set on. The sale shop is where you can find great vintage from past eras that aren't very Lune like, and also old stock from the web shop at reduced prices.

Do you follow Lune Vintage on twitter? I always tweet out new stock the moment it's listed. If you're a tweet fiend (like me) then that's a great way to be the first to know what we have to offer in both our main web store and our etsy sale shop.

Today, We're going for a warm winter walk (global warming likely - it's going to be above freezing today. For Winnipeg in January, that's unheard of) and then I'm getting to work on these listings. Peace!

"Back in 1995, I wore my thrift shop finds with pride. My favorites were a 1970’s sheering coat, a silky brown velour track suit with yellow piping, and a collection of snug western snap shirts. There is nothing better for a 15 year old on a short allowance than scoring a great wardrobe piece for under a dollar. When I moved away from home at 18, I was on a tiny budget and needed to furnish my apartment. Thrift shops and auction sales did the trick. There came a time when I realized that I wasn’t the only one who valued vintage. Deciding to sell some of what I found made a lot of sense. It gave me a reason to spend time on my hobby, and pulled in some extra money too.

Having the ability to control and change my world has always been important to me. Before I created Lune Vintage, I always had a hobby brewing. I’ve dabbled in soap making, hemp jewelry design, sign making, furniture refinishing, and perfumery. I realized that exercising my power to create and build an environment of my design empowered me as an individual. It gave my life purpose in a time when the future seemed so unsure and far away. That feeling of positive change and control lit the flame for what would be Lune Vintage."

"As a child, our family Garage Sale was the highlight of each year and I took it really seriously– at 7 years old, I wore a tool belt, considered customer service a necessity and had the masking tape around my wrist, ready to slash prices in an instant. In my early twenties, I started Freckled Nest because I’d unintentionally built an inventory of handmade gifts.

My love for inventing and handmade had kinda consumed me and I didn’t need the 50+ handmade albums I’d made, so I participated in a few local craft sales and opened an Etsy Shop. My yard sale instincts kicked back in and I was excited about the opportunity to run my own business, with handmade goods and lots of special touches and personality! The pleasure of making people smile with a good experience has always been the biggest spark behind my Indie Business dream! And I love playing store ;)"

"When I was younger I didn’t have a clear picture of what I wanted my work life to be like- I just knew that I wanted to be excited about it every day. During and after high school, I was drawn to the entertainment industry and worked behind the scenes in theatre, film, TV and music. I eventually started zeroing in on marketing and was excited to be using my strengths and to be around the energy of the industry. It was also one of the only places I could picture my social media, blogging and design background being used in my day to day work. However, the more time that I spent in entertainment the more the lifestyle and high stress work environment wore me out, and I realized that it wasn’t for me. I also realized that I didn’t know what kind of work would make me happy.

Around that time I started thinking more seriously about what life could be like if I owned my own business. As soon as the thought was in my head, it sparked something in me that quickly caught fire! I couldn’t think about anything else and I knew that this was something I needed to do. I started working on design every day and creating products for my Etsy shop, I found mentors through the blogging community who I could check in on and be inspired by every day, and I planned and researched my heart out to see if this was something that could work. Being in a situation where I wasn’t happy with my job and needed to invent a better future for myself was the start of my indie business dream, and the start of a whole new, much happier, life."

Even if you don't regularly include vintage garments in your day to day wardrobe, vintage frames do the trick to add style and character to your look. A pair of over-sized frames are so easy to pull off. There are imitations everywhere these days, but there's nothing like the real thing, don't you think? I have a collection of frames that fill two suitcases, and it's time to share. All month I'll be adding vintage styles to the site, including vanity frames and sunglasses. Enjoy!

LUNE IN 2011: a re-cap

It's the last day of the year, and it seems appropriate to spend some of it reflecting on what this past 365 days brought into and out of our lives. 2011 was a good year, full of growth, change and discovery. Here's a little run down of what went on for Lune in 2011.

January 2011 was the first full month for Lune Vintage on Broadway. The period from January until September allowed Lune to connect with our local community again. It was something I was really missing after leaving our old shop on south Osborne. This time though, it shocked me to meet many blog readers who knew so much about Lune already. I had so much fun physically creating displays and helping customers find the perfect piece. We got to contribute some pieces for our favorite local fashion mag Sandbox and a collection of other local fashion projects. It was a time when I needed to be surrounded completely by Lune, and helped me remember what I love the most about it.

Late winter we introduced Love Lune's first collection, the Lune Ojo De Dios amulet. It was a continuation of my love of textiles in jewelry design. The collection included 3 elements, Earth, Air, Fire and Water, along with a selection of tasseled earrings & pendants. We sold this design locally, through our etsy shop and via our friends at Red Velvet. If you missed it, they are available in Air and Water over at RV.

I created a tutorial on how to make a Doily Dream Catcher, which has received about 42,000 visits since it was written and been featured on numerous blogs including Etsy's How To Tuesday. The best part of it all was the photos, tweets, instagrams and emails I've received from readers showing and telling me how much they enjoyed making this craft. The results are so individual and beautiful, I can see such personality in each one. Affecting the creative life and peace of a person I've never met is definitely a huge motivation for me to continue blogging original content for Lune. Thank you so much for inspiring me to share in the best way I can here on Lune.

Our beautiful daughter Eve Moon was born on Mothers Day, May 9th. I had fears about having a daughter after having a son for more than 5 years. Turns out, there was nothing to worry about. The happiness she brings into our family is more valuable than words can say. Waking up to her morning smiles has made every single day bright. Seeing Luke as a big brother makes me feel so content that we did the right thing by deciding on just one more.

Love Lune's second collection for 2011 was our Weeping Moon fringed T. This design is still available HERE. Along with this, I continued with our line of Love Lune dyed slip dresses and went a more stormy direction of cobalt and steel blues, deep purples and deep earth colors (a small selection can be seen HERE).

Eggie spent a second summer going mobile for the Lune Vintage shop. Our biggest sale, the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, lasted 11 days. It was the hottest, driest summer I've seen in years and I was still feeling some post-pregnancy fatigue. It ended up being a great sale and fully funded our trip to the Black Hills a couple weeks later.

Our first road trip as a family of 4 went off without a hitch. I had been down South Dakota way years back when I was a teen. The scenery was breathtaking and started a resolve to spend more time exploring natural habitats up close and personal. I loved our trip to Wisconsin in 2010, but this one was even better. We also spent a beautiful weekend in Kenora and a night at my favorite vintage beach house. There's a reason why summer is my favorite season. I returned home in September and took a long look at my goals for Lune Vintage, what was working very well, what was OK, and what was lacking. It was a difficult decision to transition the shop to be exclusively online and develop the retail space into a studio, but I'm so glad I did so. In the end, there wasn't the time to passionately pursue the success of a retail location. I can't say if we'll go down that road again, but for now there are projects on the table that need my full devotion. Where they will take me, only time will tell.

With deciding to close the retail shop on Broadway, Lune Online became a larger priority. October was the first month of a brand new look. It has been such a fantastic way to offer a real edited vision of our vintage collection, that will continue to grow through the new year.

My little boy started grade one at a brand new school. He didn't know anyone in his class, but took little time to make a list of best friends. By his first report, we were told he was fitting in just fine. He continues to make me a proud momma every single day.

I got one of the funnest surprises in November when Lucky Jackson made a hand stitched portrait of me for her 365 Lucky Days series. I had never had a portrait done of me before so I considered it a huge compliment and can't wait to see it in person. She's a real talent.

Our old house got a face lift over the course of the year, with new exotic (faux) apple wood floors, clean white and poppy seed black walls, and a whole lot of fresh drywall and plaster. My father in law pioneered the effort and gave us all such a beautiful place to rest. What a wonderful gift to give. I'll show pictures of this soon in another post.

The end of the year was spent actively planning and authoring a fresh eCourse for Indie Business called the Indie Business : Compass. I've taught with Indie Business for 3 years, and year 4 brings a whole new outlook with a second course to the catalogue which explores the theory behind starting a creative independent business. It has been and will be a lot of work, but is something I have always felt very passionate to share. I know I missed something important, but you get the idea. It was a great year full of big changes and without it, everything would be different. That's the kind of value I like to see in a year. I hope 2012 will be just as life altering in all the right ways. I have just two more things to say before I go . . .

I have something fun to share with you today! Up until recently, I've been exclusively using dyes for synthetics so it was a nice change to play with a much more user friendly version. Lune was sent a selection of Dylon Dyes this year to test out and share with our readers. I am more than happy to oblige. Dye is one of my favorite mediums!

I love the pouch vs. the old style puck (shown above) for these dyes. So much easier to open and get every last drop of dye in the pot. These are warm water dyes, which is fantastic! It is so much easier to set up, and doesn't fill the room with the pungent smell of hot boiling dye. Bonus! You can use Dylon on cotton, linen and viscose which will dye to the full shade shown on the pack. Mixtures of these with polyester will result in lighter shades. Polyester, Nylon and other synthetics can not be dyed.

We're using our old faded denim, a very suitable material. I chose a blend of Amazon Green and Tulip Red on a light wash pair of old skinny jeans from h&m. To get the boldest color on denim, use the lightest pair you have. Dark denim is like dark hair, you cannot dye over it with a lighter color. Color blending rules apply, and you must include the original color of your garment in this equation. For example, if you choose pink or red dye on a light blue fabric, your results will have a purple hue.

The process of dying with warm water dye is pretty fool proof. Use a large pot (preferably one you don't plan on using for cooking) or bucket and fill it with 6 litres of warm tap water. Determining how much dye to use is based on the weight of the item. A pair of jeans is approx. 600g (1 1/4lbs) and requires a minimum of 2 packs.

DIRECTIONS

1. Weigh dry fabric. Wash thoroughly. Leave damp
2. Using rubber gloves, dissolve dye in 500ml warm water
3. Fill bowl/stainless steel sink with approx 6 litres warm water (40°C)
4. Stir in 250g (5tbsp) salt. Add dye & stir well
5. Submerge fabric in water
6. Stir for 15mins, then stir regularly for 45mins
7. Rinse fabric in cold water. Wash in warm water and dry away from direct heat & sunlight

LUNE TIP: I cannot stand to waste dye, so I often dye my first round of product in the full solution, and then submerse additional items in the left over dye overnight. I personally have had very good results with this method.

It's always a little torturous for me to wait for the full wash cycle, and the drying time to find out what the end result of my dye session was! Make sure to run an empty cycle with a bit of vinegar to rinse out your washer. It is unlikely that the bit of dye left over would affect your wash considering how diluted it would be, but just in case - I don't want your white towels to have a tint because I forgot to mention it.

The final result of my dye job! An ombre wash of light to deep purple. Ombre effects are easy to achieve. Simply leave the lower half of your jeans in the dye solution for a longer period of time than the upper. If you choose denim which already has a faded wash, an ombre will occur naturally.

It's that time of year when all I can think of is how to make the coming year count. One goal for 2012 is to hone my photography skills. I'm guilty of having a pretty nice camera and not really knowing how to use it. This year I learned more as I went along, but I'm still not living up to my potential. That's just one of many goals and ideas for 2012. Lune's goal list is pretty big, but totally attainable. I've learned a lot about myself this year and it has guided me to a very grounded place. There is nothing more essential in life, business, and relationships than to really know oneself. I guess that's another goal, to keep on track with what 2011 has taught me.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

It's that time of year. My little boy Luke turns 6 years old tomorrow. He's growing so fast, and his baby days seem so far away now. It makes me sad, but also excited for him. He's so proud to be getting bigger, and we're proud of how he's growing, learning, and becoming even more of an individual. There were some big changes for him this September. He started grade one at a brand new school, made all new friends, and got his first pair of glasses! Everything he took in stride, just like I knew he would.

This year is also Eve Moon's first Christmas. She's over 7 months old now, so bright and sweet. She's sitting up with ease, crawl dragging (with more knees each day) all over the house, has two sharp bottom teeth, is eating cereal puffs, pureed foods, and baby talking up a storm. Every day something new happens for her, so it's a very exciting time around here.

I hope you're experiencing happy times in your lives too as Christmas comes around. Thank you for the thoughtful personal messages and emails. I felt incredibly touched by them, and it meant a lot to me. I wish everyone a beautiful holiday and many moments of peace, filled with love. I'll be back after the celebration is through, all the wine has been drunk, the songs have been spun, treats have been had, the gifts have been opened and we've spent one entire day in our pajamas.

When I started the Lune blog about 3 years ago, I didn't know a single thing about html, css or photoshop. As a vintage dealer, website design wasn't a skill that I had been required to develop in my job so far. I quickly realized that it was so much like merchandising displays, something I enjoy very much. Just like I change my surroundings and displays at Lune, I change my blog design more often than most do. It's kind of a satisfying impulse, like moving furniture in your house.

Starting from scratch, I searched for the best learning resources I could find. Over the past couple years, these resources have grown and improved drastically. One of my very favorite learning and inspirational sources is Pugly Pixel. Katrina is the extremely talented and charismatic author who's written and video tutorials will amp up your own design skills. Even if you aren't into spending hours playing with blog design, she offers her own library of freebie and premium clipart, backgrounds, brushes and overlays through the Powered By Pastries Marketplace.

TOAD HALL TOYS

I've talked about loving a simple Christmas, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy a bit of shopping when it's mixed with tradition. A trip to our favorite local toy store on a snowy December afternoon is a holiday occasion in itself. Toad Hall Toys is a Winnipeg retail institution in my opinion, and has the best selection of classic and new toys and books. It might be one of my favorite stores in the whole city. As a child, I was completely spellbound by it. When I didn't have kids, I still found excuses to stop in once a year. That's why bringing my own kids to wander through the rows of toy shelves is one of my favorite Christmas traditions. Today we spend an afternoon up and down the isles picking out a couple special things for the little ones in our lives. Here's a few photos of our trip to Toad Hall Toys.

LIVING CHRISTMAS

Living Christmas trees are a great option for decorating during the holidays. They solve many issues, including falling needles (bad for pets and little children who love to eat things off the ground), disposing of the tree after the holiday is done, and will contribute to the health and green space of your neighborhood in the spring. I bought a little 3 foot pine this year and decorated it with glass pine cone ornaments, and put it on a small table so it was out of Eve's reach. It probably isn't a huge shock to you, but I find peace in natural simplicity, and decorating for the holidays is no exception to that rule. I donated almost all of my ornaments a few years ago, and what I keep from year to year fits in a small bin. All the rest is organic or recyclable. This year we didn't hang lights and honestly, I don't miss it. But I have lit cinnamon and vanilla candles every night so we have that beautiful warm glow that's so welcome this cold time of year.

Welcome to my studio! I'm a jewelry designer, clothing maker, and artist that loves bright colors and soul music. I use old fashioned techniques like macrame, knitting, and embroidery passed down from my mother and grandmother, but try to re-interpret them in a modern light. I'm naturally drawn to what stands out, always searching for materials -new and salvaged- that draw the eye. Above all else, comfort is most important so I create jewelry that makes a strong visual impact while remaining lightweight, flexible, and easy to wear.

The process starts with the materials, I'll dig through piles of scrap leather to source pieces with a soft hand and beautiful finish. The supplies used are limited and that means that each piece is one-of or a-few-of a kind. After finding materials the fun begins - cutting things up, playing with embellishments, seeing how the elements will work together. Drawing is also a big part of the process, it helps me visualize how the jewelry will relate to the forms of the body. LEARNING TO ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS

Today I wanted to talk a bit about style and the practice of editing when it relates to collecting, buying and selling vintage fashion. There is a LOT of competition out there these days for selling vintage. It can be very hard to stand out because of this, and it's easy to confuse your need for frequent updates of fresh stock with keeping your product selection strong. When buying for your shop (or for your own closet) you have to go with what you love. That means picking what you would wear, truly dig and what meets the style standard your customers expect from you. This will definitely mean passing up saleable pieces. But, it will also give you the ability to stand out as a buyer who can be trusted to provide their customers with consistent options that fit the overall vibe of the collection.

Being a selective buyer is so much easier said than done, especially when you have a dry spell like I did this week. So, when this pretty wicked little mod dress emerged through a purple haze of shopping desperation - I bit. Now, I do dig this piece actually. Just like I think girls look cute in 50's dresses and bows and get why they like it, but I'd never go that direction myself, or how I have no inclination to see Breakfast at Tiffany's, but love watching Easy Rider more each time. I ask myself often when deciding if an item is a go or a no - "Is this foxy?" or "Is this cute?". I've developed my own set of questions such as "What girl would wear this?" to help me make quick decisions in all aspects of Lune. We guide students through this concept in Indie Business: Compass and how it will become one of the many essential tools to help you run your own product or service based indie business.

Back to the purple dress. I fell for this piece because it hit both marks equally. "Foxy" because it's a micro little go-go get-up with a low slung hip belt, and "Cute" because of the peter pan collar & vivid purple hue. What I failed to do was to ask myself one of my favorite questions, "What girl would wear this?". Now that's the trick. In the 1960's, that girl would probably be a wild child, party chick with thigh high boots, flowing hair and hips that never stopped swinging. In a modern world, this dress would make more sense in a sweeter context, styled with an high messy bun, patterned tights and a pair of closed toe clogs. It would look so great on some of my friends who prefer that style. But, is it foxy in a modern context? No, at least not rock n roll, free spirited, 70's child way. So, it's not for Lune and belongs with someone else.

On Mixing Eras...

I hope I've given you a little help on how to keep yourself on track, whatever your own vintage vibe may be. Does this idea mean you can't mix eras in your collection? No way! I personally love how the feathered fascinators, loose flowing chiffon and dropped waists of 20's flapper fashion blends seamlessly with bell sleeved crochet dresses from the late 60's. In a similar way, 90's grunge recalls the iconic fashion statements of the late 60's punk scene. Style goes in cycles, so look for common elements that fit your own vibe, and make a mix of your own! It's a sure way to stand out in the crowd.

MESS & HAPPENINGS

My studio & my brain look like this right now. This is a busy time of year, and of course, I've taken on a lot. Isn't that the way it usually goes? Every time I work in studio, I find a reason to make it messy instead of sort & organize. This weekend I was in working and realized I hadn't changed our window display since October! So, I did a do over and created a holiday photo shoot complete with a vintage tinsel tree, some of my favorite holiday vintage, and studio lighting. We have a great window, it's so big and since we're on a busy street, it works as a great billboard for the shop and blog. Will take a photo to show you this week!

Yesterday was my birthday, and I was really touched by the heartfelt gifts I received from my family. They all meant so much, because they were so thoughtful and perfect. It made me feel like these people really know me. I'm going to make a point of giving that feeling to others as much as I can in the future. It's not always easy, but it's so worth it. I didn't want a big deal on my birthday this year, but I ended up feeling very loved anyway.

This gift was from my mom-in-law. It's her charm bracelet. That Happy Birthday charm was her first, when she received the bracelet for her sweet 16. 40 years later, she passed it down to me - and I couldn't be more touched. I've asked her to write me a key, detailing what each charm means. Isn't it amazing? It's like a map to so many of the milestones of her life.

I think real charm bracelets like this one should have a resurgence, don't you?

MOON BABY & the gong show

Oh my little moon baby. She's growing so fast. Eve Moon will be 7 months old next week. She has two front (bottom) teeth, is dragging herself all over the house with great determination, and can sit up without tipping (most of the time). She still sleeps through the night, and blows my mind with her easy going gentle nature. That morning smile starts our day off right.

Even though my kids are sweet as pie, my life feels like a real gong show. There's always some crazy shit going on. This morning, I opened the garage door (we have a carriage house that we converted into a garage, it's . . . primitive) and SOMEONE (aka husband) leaned my bike up against it. So suddenly, my bike was hooked on the door, and was lifting up into the air, Luke screaming at me trying to get it down, Eve squirming under the other arm. Another fun time this month was when I was carrying so much stuff into the house (again with Eve on my hip) and asked Luke to carry my coffee. He made it all the way across the yard, and proceeded to trip right at the threshold and launch the entire contents of my full (but not too hot, thankfully) coffee at me and all over the landing. It was like the great coffee flood.

Yes. A gong show.

But, even though it's crazy - damn I love it! I wouldn't trade this life for anything. Being a mom is a real great trip.

CREATING REST

We live in a century old home. I truly love it. When we were buying, I got a lot of flack for wanting an old home. It's definitely an acquired taste. Growing up, I lived in a "new" build, my family home was built just one year before I was born. Maybe it's just that you always want what you don't have, but I dreamed of staircases, big lead glass windows and oak front doors, banisters, plank flooring and cozy rooms with tall tall ceilings.

When we found this house, it was completely empty except for some graffiti the kid who lived here before left carved into most of the door frames ("No Mommy, No Daddy" and "Hate"). The basement was kind of scary, a red wall in a hidden corner with the remains of a beaded curtain. Hello Amityville Horror . . . But the price was right, and the mojo felt just fine. I've loved it ever since.

This year we focused on boring and expensive maintenance, a whole new roof because it was literally rotting through. Really, I'm saying from experience that it's a bad idea to put these things off until "next year". We're finally getting to fixing the last show of damage and re-surfacing the ceiling in our upper floor. I'm taking this chance to revive the whole area, so . . . I'm hoping for good vibes and not too much stress or injury. I have a few special vintage fixtures and furniture that I've been saving for a while for this project, so I'll post the result here when we're done.

Hi, Lune readers! I'm another one of those vintage junkies. I decorate with antiques, retro + industrial items, I wear old worn-in leather boots and put flowers in my hair.

Adding vintage touches to your closet and home can be simple and inexpensive. Some of my favorite things are found in flea markets, yard sales + antique fairs. The trick: you have to hunt for it. I have tons of vintage tins and use them for storing all sorts of knick-knacks – way better than plastic bins. Find new ways to utilize old pieces: add a brooch to your headband, wrap a gift in vintage fabric or turn an old window into a seating chart like this.

Vintage books with hazy watercolors are where it's at. Case in point. Strange Creatures from the time of the Dinosaurs by Erna Dirks Rowe & Alan Daniel - North Winds Press - 1980. A library discard we picked up this week. Luke loved the names; Elasmosaurus, Archaeopteryx. I loved the mist filled watercolor illustrations. Here are a few favorites for you to enjoy.

Freakin out this week over some great thrift scores. This open weave bell sleeve - probably a beach cover up at some point but now my favorite extra layer. I grabbed yet another leather tooled belt. Honestly, how many of those can one person have? But I swear, you just can't buy good belts retail anymore, especially nice wide ones like this. More than once a man in line behind me has made this statement about my belt purchase. Too bad buddy.

You know, a great tool to have in your diy toolbox is a leather hole punch. I got mine for 49c a few years ago, second hand of course. They're fantastic for adding an extra hole to make a misfitting belt your perfect size. Also, for those of you trying to lose baby weight like me, it can come in handy.

Speaking of that topic, it's been 6 months and I've managed to lose 20 lbs, but now I'm at a real standstill. Feels like it's harder to drop the baby weight this time around. Me and working out are a hilariously impossible combo. I've never been into that. I don't think I've owned a pair of runners since I took my last year of phys-ed (maybe grade 10?). I was the girl who wrote the essay instead of doing track and field - or just skipped it entirely and watched much music in my friends basement (to be more honest). It was a big whatever. But now, when I think I should take physical fitness more seriously it's such a foreign concept - I really don't know where to start.

I did belly dancing for a few months back in 2003. I mean, I like the scarves, bare feet and coin belts. Maybe I could take that up again.

I bought this vintage Avon mirror backed pendant yesterday. It was a very good buying trip, but of course, I always struggle with wanting to keep everything for myself. Normally, I wouldn't be into a pink rose necklace, but with all that gold wreathing backed on a onyx black cabochon... I don't know. I might be able to fit it in.

You might have noticed that I did a blog overhaul last night. I hope you enjoy the new layout as much as I do! It was all inspired by that photo my mom brought over this past weekend. It reminds me to stay true to myself, remembering where I've come from and where I'm going in business and in life.

My mom came by this weekend and brought me a few treasures from the past. It's always fun to see something you haven't laid eyes on in years, total flashback. In case you couldn't tell, that's me. I was about 2 when this photo was taken. We were on a family road trip and passed through Sioux Narrows, Ontario.

The two vintage cuckoo clocks, one over 50 years old, are going to be cleaned and enjoyed again. My mom tells me how that little bird would rat her out when she was still living at home and came home late. It was bought by my grandmother, who died of leukemia when my mom was a teenager . She saved food coupons to buy this clock. A few years after she passed, there was a freak fire in the home and almost everything was burned. Only what had been taken out of the house before hand survived, and out of those very few items, this was one of them. I'm glad I have it now.

Little things, just things, but valuable in their memory.

A Silk Scarf Furoshiki

This time of year, we're all thinking about gifting. Imagine all that wrapping paper, all those gift bags, all that waste. Furoshiki, a type of traditional Japanese wrapping cloth, is a beautiful way to present your gifts and avoid waste. Pretty fabric scraps and thrifted scarves work perfectly for this technique. Here's how we're packaging our Dreamdance Ornaments for this season.

First, find a square scarf (or fold down the long side of a rectangle to create a square) and fold it into a manageable size. I folded this one in half twice, which makes it more opaque and small enough to fold cleanly. I wrapped my package in one sheet of recycled tissue, but this isn't a necessary step.

Grab opposite corners and tie one snug knot, then grab the other opposite corners and tie another knot. You'll have 4 points to gather with a ribbon or bit of string. I chose to use string to secure the knot because I wanted the recipient of the gift to be able to enjoy this vintage silk scarf. If you're using a scrap of fabric, you can also double knot and skip the ribbon.

I've used this technique with vintage scarves and scrap for years, but I have to give a shout out to Rachel at Firebird Retro for giving it a name.

November is a busy month, I'm not kidding. Last night I shot another update, this time a winter formal for Lune Vintage. Some sparkle and shimmer was a welcome departure, it was a bit of dress up, but December is the perfect time for it. Today I'll start editing the photos in the afternoon and will probably have a hard time not sharing some favorites, so you'll see them here later today.

So, what's really on my mind is that I'm working in collaboration with LA and Kyla Roma on a huge project I feel very passionate about, which will be announced very soon, on December 1st (my birthday). This year has brought intense perspective & change to my life, and it's been so valuable to reference it. Although my days have gotten noteably fuller (didn't think that was possible), it has also been one of the most productive times of my life.

When Lune took root, I was in my early 20's and just married with far away thoughts of starting a family. I had no idea what it would take to hold on to my dreams ten years later. Every month I get a handful of emails from women who have a business dream but feel that mix of fear, guilt and intimidation that most mothers get when they know that for their goals to be met, it will mean sacrifice in another area of their lives. That doubt stalls them, and with good reason. Financial stress, time limits, and overall logistics of running an independent business is drastically more complicated when you also hold the prestigious title of "Mommy".

I am happy to tell you with certainty that if you want it - you can make it happen. You can definitely make your creative independent business work for your lifestyle, your timeline, your financial situation and your family. It may not be typical, but who want's to be just like everyone else anyway?

Out of everything that I'm working on to bring to this new collaboration, this is my greatest motivation.

And with that, and not being too much of a spoiler ... it's back to work while baby naps.

The peace sign. A symbol which adorns "Made in China" pre-teen backpacks, key chains, costume jewelry and sparkly pink pajamas. In truth, the symbol's history is based in a passionate up rise against the danger and destruction of nuclear warfare.

The peace symbol itself was created in 1958 by British graphic artist Gerald Holtom. The symbol was designed in response to the organizing of a rally bringing attention to the growing worldwide stockpile of nuclear weapons. Holtom created a sketch of his original design, based on the military semaphore (flag) symbols for the letters “N” and “D” to represent Nuclear Disarmament. He later expressed that “I was in despair, Deep despair. I drew myself: the representative of an individual in despair, with hands palm outstretched outwards and downwards in the manner of Goya’s peasant before the firing squad. I formalized the drawing into a line and put a circle around it.”

The symbol was quickly adopted by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, and in the following years by supporters of the Civil Rights movement. In the 1960's, it became a strong symbol of unity against the Vietnam War. It branded a generation of youths immersed in a movement of anti-war sentiment, free love, spirituality and the right to be an individual.

The peace symbol is as meaningful today as it was back in 1958. Although some of the issues and circumstances have changed, the sentiment remains. Wear it with pride, and with intention to represent it's meaning in the way you conduct your day to day life, and in the choices you make as a citizen of your country and your world.

Is this sad face of my teething Eve (two teeth!) justification enough of why Lune's update is running late? No? Well, I tried to not be late - but of course that measuring gets me every time! Usually, it involves bringing Eve in with me to the studio to play and hopefully nap. The past week or so she's having a hard time keeping her usually sunny disposition with one top and one bottom tooth coming through. I didn't have the heart to drag her. The evening? Yeah. That's full of making supper, reading homework, shipping, banking, baths, and here I am now.

The full update is actually on the site now - but all new items are marked coming soon until tomorrow afternoon when little miss toothache and I will be inputting the size details of each garment. If you'd like to see what's new - you can see it all HERE.

Shop Update preview

Hi. I'm back for one more round of previews before tomorrows online shop update. I'm having so much fun curating the shop these days. Getting excited about choosing which garments make the cut, taking and editing the photos, and seeing the collection grow and change. It's a slice of happiness in my world.

Here are a few more of my favorite looks from our first November update.

Both of these 70's day dresses float my boat, and are actually so similar it's as though they came from the same wardrobe. That pocket square...the ascot, come on now. Hired!

Palazzo Pantsuits! A little bit sexy power vixen, a little bit super hero, one from the 60's and the other a 70's child. Too cool for words.

The pretty peasant dress has a special place in my heart. It makes me so happy that their flower child beauty still remains 50 years after they were worn by their original owner. I wonder what stories they would tell.

Embroidered Spanish cotton dresses with tall boots and strappy bags. Pair them with knitted tights and chunky knit sweaters for fall, then bring them on vacation to get away from the cold. Man, I hope this is something I can do this year.

Around here, we had a good weekend. Celebrating our best friends birthday in my favorite pub, watching the floor move (for real), spending time with my cute nephews, and lots of couch relaxing time. I'm ready for a new week.

Today I'm flying solo for most of the day to get some work done at the studio. First off, a photo shoot with Alexis for the website. I in took some major vintage, including vintage caftans, pesant dresses, and beautiful maxi dresses. Later on in the day, I have a meeting with my friends and studio mates at Freckled Nest on a big project we're working very hard on together. More about that very soon. It's going to be nice to get down to work without having to get up every few minutes to wipe up baby puke or change a diaper. So is my life.

Clear Glass Marble

Fishing Lure

Strong (glass.metal) glue

Jewelry Pliers/Cutters

1 Jump Ring

First, dis-assemble your fishing lure. I purchased this one in a pack at the dollar store. Use your glue to adhere the glass marble to the metal reflector. Most marbles have pits and flaws, so this would be the area you'd most likely want to place in the glue. Let the two set for a few hours at room temperature to ensure it's good to go.

Once your crystal ball pendant is dry, use your jump ring to hang it on your chain. I wanted some extra length to the pendant, so I added a single white duck feather. A long chain tassel would be beautiful too.

I get so inspired by the styling graphics on vintage patterns. They actually offer a great education on what wardrobes really looked like in that era. These collections are from the 70's and feature major separates, vests, pants, knee skirts, tunics, waist belts, plaid, color blocking and stripes. Plus - knee high boots and belt bags. Fall in the 70's looked really put together and confidant.

zombie apocalypse

Todd and I are fans of horror movies - more so the pre 1985 kind. I love the social commentary more than anything, but there's something so great about sitting down to watch a good vintage horror flick. Zombies take the cake. Last year, I showed Luke a video of the prior years zombie walk in Winnipeg and asked him if he wanted to go with us. He decided, no, even though his cousin was going, he was too scared. I didn't blame him, but we make it a point to always give him choices when we can, within reason. Meaning, we would never allow him to watch age inappropriate movies or video games that he's not ready to consume with an objective mind. We've had several discussions about zombies and felt like he understood the concept enough to have fun with dressing up as one and checking out the "walk" firsthand.

This year, he was super excited. So we dressed him and his cousin up and took them out while the full moon rose for a night of walking with the dead. He does a pretty good zombie walk. There were some wicked bad ass zombie costumes, but I'm not so great at low light photography - that and trying to keep my hand on him at all times was challenging. Everyone was very good natured and proved that we can all dress up like psycho's and remain very civilized.

It was a fun night. We stayed only a short while and left for doughnuts and hot chocolate before he got tired out, and it wasn't too late of a bedtime. Didn't we look pretty?

Every fall we do a few things as ritual, one of them being taking a visit to a corn maze, visiting the petting zoo, climbing the haystack mountain, and picking a pumpkin. Luke told us on the way home "I loved this day!". Man, what more could you want to hear? He's the best.

This lead me (via poppytalk) to Ryan Doco Connors | Photography. His creative portfolio is complete eye candy. In a behind the scenes series, Ryan chronicles the process of several photo shoots with just as much style as his final product.

The makeup in Ryan's creative series is accomplished by wildly talented Vancouver makeup artist Dina Day. I love the process photography available from both Ryan and Dina. People are never more interresting than when they're in the midst of creation.

I like big glasses that hold lots of ice. Have you ever used a canning jar to serve sangria, margaritas, iced tea or soda? They rule for smoothies because they're big enough to hold a whole batch, and at parties when you don't want to get up for refills non-stop. Ah, thank you to my thrift store for being the go to source for caning jars ( .35 each) without fail. Use them for candle holders, vases, terrariums, dry storage and ... canning. Go grab some today, and pour yourself a drink.

So. What's up with me ... Well, today I cleaned my closet to give myself some "off" time. I donated a good 90% of what I own, and pulled some vintage that I kept for myself but haven't worn enough to warrant it. It feels good to do this, because I know when I let clothes I don't love start to pile up, I end up wearing them anyway because it's easier. If they aren't there to grab, then slouchy grey t-shirt with dye stains number 5 really isn't an option, is it? All the cleaning is also because of Fall cleaning, which happens to me instead of Spring cleaning. I know I'm going to be stuck inside for quite a few months (it might snow tomorrow) so I try make it easier on us by getting grid of the extra "stuff".

Anyway - this was such a blah post. No one's A game all the time right?
